Overview
Perinatology — also called maternal-fetal medicine — is specialized care for pregnancies considered higher-risk because of an existing health condition, age, prior complications, or findings on screening. At PLMEDS we provide consultation, advanced ultrasound, and ongoing co-management with your obstetrician.
Why it’s done
You may be referred to perinatology if you have:
- Diabetes (type 1, 2, or gestational)
- High blood pressure or pre-eclampsia history
- Multiples (twins, triplets)
- Maternal age 35+
- Previous pregnancy complications
- An abnormal screening result
How to prepare
What to expect
A typical consultation lasts 45–60 minutes and includes a detailed history review, advanced ultrasound, and a face-to-face discussion of findings. We send a written summary to your OB the same day.

Results & follow-up
Most findings are reviewed in real time, in the room with you. A written summary is sent to your obstetrician the same day. Follow-up scans are scheduled based on what we see — anywhere from a one-time consult to weekly visits in the third trimester.
